Teddy practice

A few Christmas' ago I got a 'make your own' sock teddy box, where I am given stuffing, socks, thread, needle and buttons to complete the teddy.
Today I have figured out it will give me a good understanding of teddy making for my product Hush and Shush, perhaps even some more info into them, perhaps I could make them out of old socks instead of buying felt?

Here I have cut out the different pieces to be sown together

To sow the pieces together you must first turn them inside out, this will reduce the visible string when you pull it out, then stuff in the fluff and your about sorted
or so I thought, I had attacked the head wrong, you are supposed to close up the areas you were going to join to give it a rounded look, thus I had to redo the head and shoulders and she does already look better.

Universities

I would like to go on to a university that has a good illustration course
I have had a look at other possible things to go into, animation, graphic designing and a few other possible career choices, however they all seem to somehow link up with illustration, therefore I concluded it would be the best course of action to choose illustration in university, to improve myself and hopefully with the things I learn finally decide what I should go for.

University of Huddersfield
www.hud.ac.uk

 Is a 3 year course on full time, or a 4 year sandwich course, a sandwich is basically when you have a work placement between your studies.

The course allows students to independently develop as image makers, by showing how to fully appreciate contemporary art and by  researching different techniques and media.

The first year will be dedicated to experimentation, using and finding out about different media's and concepts, which will help me develop and find out what my own strengths are. The second year will be about expanding my current skills, while considering my professional for my work, with opportunity's for projects outside of university life, nationally or internationally.
The final year is mainly about producing a professional standard portfolio.

To be considered for this course I would need;

  •  DMM – DDM BTEC National (which I am currently working towards in my college course
  •  Pass in Diploma Foundation studies in Art and Design combined with A Level or BTEC National points to an equivalent of 300 points
  • Pass or above in GSCE Maths and English
  • High quality portfolio
  • Great interview
"The academic team have practical experience in the field, strong links with industry, and with the Association of Illustrators. Guest speakers from a range of art and illustration backgrounds give added value and additional insights. It all adds up to a lively and rewarding programme of study."

Arts University Bournemouth

http://aub.ac.uk/courses/ba/ba-illustration/
Their illustration course is a 3 year course only.
During the course you will learn to expand your knowledge of art, experimenting with different medias and will become a member of a lively community, celebrating and engaging with contemporary illustration.
you will be encouraged to be outgoing in terms of marketing your work and connect with relevant audiences for your practice.
To get on this course I would need;

  • 5 GCSE Passes at grade C or above
  • Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
  • DDM to DMM at BTEC Extended Diploma
Manchester School of Art
http://www.art.mmu.ac.uk/illustration/
A 3 year illustration animation course.

Combining illustration with animation will make you go through a variety of challenges that will help you develop strategies and skills so that you will successfully survive a range of visual communication problems.(by animation the course actually means movement captured in illustration, I learnt this from going to the UCAS event in London). The course is about drawing, developing visual dialogues and generating ideas for highly resolved creative outcomes. experimenting with different media to successfully overcome any problems, also to encourage you to  develop strategies and skills.
you will be introduced to real life situations that you will help you in professional practice.
Graduates have gone to further study/ or a career in;
  • MA in Design
  • Art Direction
  • Freelance illustrators
  • Animators
  • Designers
  • Product artists
  • Storyboard Artists
  • Picture Researchers
  • Teachers
To get on this course I would need;

  • Foundation Diploma in Art and Design
  • GCSE Grade C or above in English Language
  MA University of Plymouth
http://www5.plymouth.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-illustration
I am also interested in looking into the university of Plymouth who say that studying with them will help me in creating original images as they do not have just one style. Students must regularly attend lessons and are free to do whatever within their own studio space and with their growing reputation it isn't a surprise if their standards would be hard.

Taking part in this university will open the doorways to these careers;

  • Art director
  • Animator, storyboard artist and digital illustrator
  • Graphic/editorial designer
  • Toy and character designer
  • Comic book or graphic novelist
  • Printmaker and small press publisher
  • Zinester

  • The course is one year for full time and its cost is around 5,100
    this course is post graduate which means if I choose to I would go onto this course after going to university.

    Quick hands

    These are just a few recerences for the future, hands are arguable one of the hardest body parts to draw, you can never have enough practice. These are primary photos of my own hand which i had painted to test out patterns and colour combinations

    Doodle of the month

    I decided to design a 'slenderman' character while trying to make him unique, I mainly based him on the tale of the 'sandman' who comes into your room and throws sand at you so you can have a good nights sleep.
    My idea was to have him also related to things that are supposed to help you sleep- e.g. counting sheep, avoiding the colour blue and well being comfy.

    He is usually covered in thick wool everywhere he goes, but every now and then he gets sheered and barely realises the awkward difference.

    Ideas and planning

    After a mixture of doodling and life drawing I created two human/octopus hybrids completely randomly but it gave me a thought to what to do for my abstraction work here is the image;
    Though this seems a little more surreal than abstract-

    My Idea is to take small parts of the human body and combine small parts from animals
    in a similar manner to this;
    3 different images combined together in small segments; my idea is to be similar to this but of course with two species not of one.

    More on abstraction to come
